Has it really been that long…

I can’t believe my last post was July 11th!  How time flies…

Well, since then, I’ve had my beautiful and big baby boy.  And now I’m getting ready to re-start my  healthy, active lifestyle.  I’ve got 20 pounds of baby weight to lose to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight of 140.  But finding the time to work out is going to be hard.  Really hard.  And  retraining myself to eat right is also going to be hard.  My sweet tooth has hit with a vengeance and I’m struggling.  I’m hoping that this website will be an accountability tool for me since I’ll be posting my progress.

Stay tuned.  The adventure will begin shortly…

Psalm 73:25-28

“Whom have I in heaven but you?  And earth has nothing I desire besides you.  My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.  Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.  But as for me, it is good to be near God.  I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.”

Psalm 73:25-28

NOR Family Fun Day

North of the River Parks and Recreation is having a Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 2nd from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Fruitvale-Norris Park (6621 Norris Rd).  They are going to have free hot dogs, water slide, family games and fun inflatables.  Did I mention it’s FREE!!!

Shafter will be having their annual fireworks show on Sunday, July 3rd as soon as the sun goes down.  It’s held every year at the Shafter High football field.  It’s always a ton of fun and a great show.  Shafter really isn’t that far away.  It would probably take you longer to drive from one side of Bakersfield to the other!  🙂

Patsy’s Blackberry Cobbler

This is a yummy recipe from The Pioneer Woman Cooks cookbook.  I love her intros to her recipes.  They always make me smile or laugh out loud.  I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do.

You will need:

  • 1/4 pound (1 stick) butter, melted
  • 1 1/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups fresh (or frozen) blackberries (or blueberries, peaches, raspberries, and so on)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease a 3-quart baking dish with butter.

Place the stick of butter in a microwave-safe dish.  Heat in a microwave for 30 to 45 seconds, until melted.

In a medium bowl, whisk 1 cup of the sugar with the flour and milk.

Whisk in the melted butter.

Rinse the blackberries and pat them dry.

Pour the batter into the baking dish.  Sprinkle the blackberries evenly over the top of the batter.

Sprinkle 1/4 cup sugar over the blackberries.

Bake for 1 hour, or until golden brown and bubbly.  When 10 minutes of cooking time remain, sprinkle the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar over the top.

Just look at the golden, crispy deliciousness!  Serve it by the spoonful.  Top with shipped cream or ice cream…or both.  Live a little!

Vacation and Eating

It’s summer time which means vacation time!  Who doesn’t love going on vacation, eating like a pig, and finding out you’ve gained 10-15 pounds in a week?  Ok, most people don’t.  In fact, I don’t know of anyone who does.  So, let’s looks at some ideas that can help us when we’re on the road and traveling.

Fast food is our nemesis.  Everything is greasy and fried.  You think the salad is good?  Think again. How many of us have ordered a grilled chicken Caesar salad thinking we were making a good choice?  Did you know the Spicy Chicken Caesar Salad from Wendy’s has 760 calories and 1980 mg of sodium!  The Caesar salad from McDonalds, however, only has 410 calories and 890 mg of sodium.  Interesting…

It pays to do your research before you go on vacation.  All restaurants/fast food chains have their nutrition information available online.  This will help you make good choices when stopping in for a quick meal.

A few other ideas are to stay with whole grain buns/bread, grilled chicken, snack on nuts or fruit (make sure the nuts aren’t heavily seasoned or salted), limit soda and sugary drinks, and drink a lot of water.  Also, if you’re staying at hotel, take advantage of the hotel gym or pool.

There are still yummy, healthy options out there while you’re traveling.  It just takes a little more effort to stick with it while traveling, but I know you can do it!  Remember, this is a lifestyle change you’re making.  The change doesn’t just happen in the comfort of our own home and gym.  We have to apply the change to every area of our lives.

Have a great summer!!!

The Patterns of this World

Be advised: this is a long one.  But God just kept putting so much on my heart and my fingers just kept typing and He kept giving me scripture.  So, take your time in reading this, please.  When God gives us something it’s for a reason.  I was blessed and challenged and convicted (yes, all three at the same time) when writing this.  So, I don’t know if all of this was just for me or for one of my faithful followers, but I hope you’re able to take the time to read it, not just skim it, and get something out of it.

“Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Romans 12:2

Have you ever actually thought about what the patterns of this world are?  What do they include?  How do we know what they are?

So, what are the patterns of this world?  They are those things that cause you to sin, or could potentially cause you to sin.  Here are a few obvious ones: drugs, lying, getting drunk, pre-marital sex/adultery…  What about the less obvious ones?  The big ones, for the most part, are pretty easy to avoid.  But what about what we watch on t.v.?  I can’t believe what I see on t.v. these days!!!  Shows like “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette” are shocking to me.  It seems the show is only about sex now.  Ephesians 5:3 says “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed because these are improper for God’s people.”   Did you get that?  Not even a HINT.  Let’s face it; even commercials on t.v. are full of “hints” of sexual immorality.  So, how do we avoid even a hint?  We’ll get to that in a minute…

A few other less obvious ones might be our language, gossiping, how we treat people, “white lies”, road rage, obscene jokes, love of money, jealousy…  The list goes on and on and on…

We live in a sinful world.  We don’t come into the world “good” people. (Romans 3:10 “…There is no one righteous, not even one…”)  We come into the world sinners.  It’s our human nature to want to do these things.  We want to please our flesh and that is why is it SO incredibly hard to live a life that’s pleasing to God by not conforming to the world.

Let’s get back to how to avoid even a hint of sexual immorality.  It’s hard…but not really.  It’s our old nature vs. our new nature.  Sin vs. pleasing God.  The answer is easy: Don’t watch bad t.v., read dirty books, look at it on the computer, ready magazines with half naked women on them or with any sexual content…  Easy, right?  NO!  But it’s what we have to do.  There’s no other way other than to eliminate it completely.  Sex is EVERYWHERE!!!  We just have to choose to avoid it at ALL cost.  It’s hard, but it can be done.  One really easy thing to do is…this may shock you…cancel you cable.  WHAT???  We did that about seven months ago and I haven’t regretted it once!  It’s liberating.  It was what God wanted us to do.  And if you can’t take the giant steps for God, then you have to ask yourself if you really want to please Him or yourself.

What about the other things on the list?  Drinking?  Is it ok if you’re not drunk?  What is drunk?  Is it being over the legal limit or how you feel?  More importantly, if someone you know is a non-Christian and sees you drinking, what are they going to think?  Is it going to hurt your witness for Christ?  Is it a soul lost to the world?  I heard a pastor say once, “I don’t care if you have a beer, just don’t get drunk.”  What?  I was shocked!!!  If I ever saw my pastor drinking a beer, his credibility as a Christian would be lost.  I could never go to him for advice or counseling again.  Do people think that about you?

Love of money is a big one. (I Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.”)  We all want it because we all want stuff.  Money makes us feel safe.  But when we’re relying on money, we’re not relying on God who promises to provide for us.  Matthew 6:25&26 says, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more important that food, and the body more important than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?”  I LOVE that!  If God takes care of the birds then why wouldn’t he take care of us???

Ultimately, if we’re conforming to the world and all the things the world loves and accepts, then we’re not going to be able to do what God wants us to do.  God is perfect and beautiful and loves us SO much.  He wants the very best for us.  He has amazing plans for us!  Jeremiah 29:11″‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to five you hope and a future.'”  He goes on to say that when we seek Him with all our heart then we will find Him.  The ONLY way to live the best life possible is to seek God’s will in our life and that’s IMPOSSIBLE to do if we’re stuck on living for the world and not Him.  He has such amazing plans for us.  Do you really want to pass that up for the world?

I challenge you to take a look at yourself and see where you are falling into the patterns of this world.  What is keeping you from becoming closer to God?  We all have things in our lives that are doing this.  And once we find one and, with God’s help, overcome it, there’s probably going to be another one.  God’s will and plan for our lives are beyond what we could ever imagine.  His will is for us to prosper and to have hope and a future.  Can you say that about anything of this world?

I feel like I could go on and on with this topic.  But I will end it with this one last thing: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  How are you showing YOUR love to God?

“Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Romans 12:2

Goodbye for now, Gym.

At 31 weeks of pregnancy, I am putting a 4 month hold on my gym membership.  Sigh.  For some reason, this has been a very hard thing for me to do.  I know I need to since I’m so stinkin tired all the time and working out just makes me more tired at this point.   But the thought of not going to the gym for 4 months is hard.  So, this is my plan: I’m going to totally gorge myself on junk food and all the things I’m not going to want to eat once the baby is born.  Then, 6 weeks after the baby comes, I’m back to the wonderful life of running and at home strength training.  When November comes around it will be back to the gym.  Ok, so the junk food thing might actually already be happening and has been happening throughout the last couple of months…  Just sayin…

I had initially wanted to do the inaugural Tinkerbell Half Marathon at Disneyland in January, but due to lack of training time, it’s just not going to happen.  I can’t push myself and risk injury with THREE kids.  (Am I really going to have 3 kids???)  Luckily, they have a 5k my husband and I are, hopefully, going to do.  I’m hoping he’ll want to wear matching outfits.  Hehe.  It starts at 10 p.m., which is super cool!!!  This will be part of my 30th b-day present to myself.  The other part will be going on the annual quilt shop hop with my mom since she’s turning a milestone b-day, too, in the same year.  But don’t tell her I want to go.  I think her heart is in good condition, but I wouldn’t want to give her this shock just yet…

So, 5k training to commence 6 weeks after the baby.  But let’s be real, here.  I only waited 5 weeks to start running after having Addison.  So, I’ll probably only wait 4 weeks after the baby is born because I’m SO excited to start working out again.

I should probably get a jogging stroller…and a new outfit…or two…
